Santa Cruz Island in the Galapagos Islands is the perfect place to explore if you're looking for a purely natural environment to get lost in. The volcanic landscape of Santa Cruz Island in Ecuador can make you feel as if you've left the planet, if only for a moment; however, you will surely encounter diverse wildlife during your travels as a reminder that you are indeed on Earth.

The Galapagos Islands host iguanas, sea lions, dolphins, and even sea turtles. There are more than 200 species of birds, including the iconic blue-footed boobies, as well as five species of giant tortoises. The Galapagos Islands also boast impressively varied plant life, including the world’s only living coral reef. The best way to see most of these sites is by booking a  tour.

The Galapagos Islands were not on my bucket list, but its awe-inspiring beauty left a memorable impression on my psyche as one of my favorite travel experiences.  With that, I’d like to share with you my top 10 activities will find on Santa Cruz Island.

1. Charles Darwin Research Station

A visit to the Charles Darwin Research Station is a great way to learn more about the Galapagos Islands and the species that inhabit them. The station offers guided tours and educational programs that will teach you all about the wildlife and natural habitats of the area.

2. Tortuga Bay

Tortuga Bay is a beautiful beach located on the eastern coast of Santa Cruz Island. Here, you can take in stunning views, go swimming, and even spot some of the local wildlife including red crabs and huge iguanas.

3. Las Grietas

Las Grietas is a pristine and spectacular swimming hole; a swimmer’s dream.  It is an earth crevice with clear turquoise water that is made up of both fresh filtration water and salt water from the sea. The crevices reach depths of up to 30 feet, creating a truly scenic experience. It is one of the most spectacular attractions on Santa Cruz Island and you’ll see why immediately upon arrival.

4. Hike the Twin Craters Trail

The Twin Craters Trail is a great way to explore the unique volcanic landscape of Santa Cruz Island. The trail is a moderate hike and offers some spectacular views of the area. The Twin Craters or Los Gemelos are, in fact, not craters. A magma (lava) dome hardened on the outside; but continued to flow on the inside, leaving huge, empty chambers that collapsed with the passage of time, forming stunning scenery that resembles two pit crates. The Twins are located in the highlands of Santa Cruz Island and are surrounded by lush, green forests.

5. Snorkeling

When snorkeling off the coast of Santa Cruz Island, you’ll be treated to a stunning watery landscape. The abundant coral reefs are filled with a variety of marine life, including sea turtles, stingrays, tropical fish, and even sharks. As you make your way through the waters, you’ll also be able to spot sea lions sunning on the rocks and swimming around you, providing a fantastic snorkeling experience. If you’re an experienced snorkeler, you may want to venture further offshore and explore some of the deeper areas of the ocean that hosts hammerhead and white tipped reef sharks, penguins, and whales.


6. Scuba Diving 

Santa Cruz Island is home to some of the best snorkeling and scuba diving locations in the world. Yes, the world! Get ready to take in the the abundant underwater life and stunning coral reefs.

7. Malecon de Puerto Ayora

Malecon de Puerto Ayora is a waterfront park that is a great place to sit, have a bite and take in the scenery.  The boardwalk is filled with restaurants and agencies. The piers are filled with sea lions lounging on the benches, iguanas lazing everywhere, and pelicans and frigate birds fighting over scraps. In the ocean, you just might see sharks, rays, sea turtles or sea lions. A cool place to wander, it also offers plenty of activities if that’s what you’re in the mood for whether it’s swimming, snorkeling, fishing, or boating. The park also has a variety of restaurants and cafes, as well as shops and galleries to explore.

8. The Highlands

The highlands of Santa Cruz Island are an amazing place to explore. Here, you can see the lush vegetation, beautiful waterfalls, and stunning views of the surrounding islands.


9. Watch Wildlife

The Galapagos Islands are home to a wide variety of wildlife including giant tortoises, marine iguanas, blue-footed boobies, and more. Take a boat tour or hike through the area and you’ll likely spot some of these animals in their natural environment.



10. Salt Mines

The Salt Mines, located on the southern part of the island, are formed by the evaporation of seawater, which is then trapped within the salt deposits. This process has been occurring for millions of years and is still happening today. They are home to a variety of unique species, including sea turtles, sea lions, and a number of birds. Visitors can take a tour of the mines and learn the history and science behind them.  And the stunning pink scenery is not to be missed.


Santa Cruz Island, Galapagos Islands is an amazing destination with TONS of things to do. Whether you are interested in wildlife watching, snorkeling, or exploring the history of the islands, there is something for everyone. So pack your bags and get ready for a purely unforgettable adventure!
