Mexico City: The New Expat Hotspot and Why Everyone's Flocking There

El Palacio de Bellas Artes or Palace of Fine Arts

In 2022 approximately 25,000 foreigners obtained permanent residency in Mexico City.  Astounding, I know.  In the first half of 2023 approximately 10,500 foreigners obtained permanent residency.

This does not include the many immigrants with temporary residency, which means that they are living out their first 4 years before being eligible for permanent residency.

In the short time that I’ve resided here in Mexico City the number of foreigners from the U.S. has skyrocketed.  U.S. Americans and Canadiens are literally everywhere.

I’ve spoken to quite a few visitors and new immigrants during social events, conducted a bit of research and found the top reasons that Mexico City has become so appealing to foreigners.

Lower Cost of Living

Mexico City is a place where your hard-earned dollars can stretch a bit further. The cost of living is a bit lower compared to many major cities around the world; however it is a huge metropolis and cost of living is higher in the capital city compared to many beach towns and smaller towns throughout Mexico.

You can, however enjoy a comfortable lifestyle without breaking the bank. Whether it's rent, groceries, or dining out, you'll find that your money goes further in Mexico City depending on where you’re from with the caveat that the prices will likely continue to climb as the foreign population increases.

Proximity to the United States

Mexico City is just a hop, skip, and a plane ride away from the United States. This makes it a fantastic choice for Americans who want to experience a different culture and lifestyle without venturing too far from home and into a completely inconvenient time zone. The fact that the journey is also drivable is very attractive.

The Rise of Remote Work

Remote work has become a game-changer, opening up a world of possibilities for individuals seeking a more flexible and location-independent lifestyle. Mexico City has emerged as a top destination for remote workers due to its many advantages.

Remote workers can enjoy the freedom to set their own schedules, work from anywhere within the city, and immerse themselves in a dynamic and stimulating environment.

The city's infrastructure is well-equipped to support remote workers, with reliable internet connectivity, co-working spaces, and tech-savvy communities.

Whether you prefer to work from a cozy café, a modern co-working space, or the comfort of your own home, Mexico City provides the flexibility and resources to stay connected and productive.

The Climate

Mexico City's climate is a major draw for expats and locals alike. Imagine living in a city where you can enjoy warm, sunny days all year round. The city's high altitude keeps the temperatures moderate, with average highs in the mid-70s Fahrenheit (around 24 degrees Celsius) and lows in the mid-50s Fahrenheit (around 13 degrees Celsius).

Say goodbye to shoveling snow or dealing with sweltering summer heat.

Diverse Culinary Scene

If you're a foodie on a budget, Mexico City is your dream come true. The city is a culinary wonderland where you can indulge in mouthwatering dishes without breaking the bank.

From street food carts to fine dining restaurants, Mexico City's culinary scene is as diverse as it is delicious. You can savor traditional Mexican foods like tacos, tamales, and pozole, or try global food cuisines from all corners of the world.

Of course, there are many restaurants that offer a steeper price tag, but delicious food made with all natural ingredients is abundant and easily found.

Vibrant Culture and Arts Scene

Mexico City is a vibrant cultural hub that attracts people from all walks of life. Its rich history, diverse traditions, and thriving arts scene create an intoxicating atmosphere that captivates the soul.

Mexico City is home to numerous and renowned museums, including the National Museum of Anthropology, where you can learn about Mexico's rich indigenous heritage.

The city's art scene is equally impressive. From world-class galleries to underground street art, there's something for every taste. Take in a performance at the Palacio de Bellas Artes, one of the most iconic opera houses in the world, or explore the Frida Kahlo Museum, dedicated to the life and work of Mexico's beloved artist.

But it's not just the big-ticket attractions that make Mexico City's cultural scene so special. It's the everyday moments that truly capture the city's essence by strolling down an ordinary block. From the lively Mariachi bands serenading you in the Zócalo to the traditional dance performances in the city's many plazas, you will always need to have your camera on the ready.

Affordable Healthcare

When it comes to healthcare, Mexico City is a breath of fresh air for expats. The city boasts a well-developed healthcare system that offers high-quality medical care at a fraction of the cost compared to many other countries.

Whether you're seeking routine checkups, specialized treatments, or emergency care, you'll find a wide range of healthcare providers to choose from in Mexico City. From public hospitals and clinics to private healthcare facilities, there's an option for every budget and preference.

Public healthcare in Mexico City is accessible to all residents, regardless of their immigration status. Private health insurance is also available, offering a wider range of services and the flexibility to choose your own doctors and hospitals.  However, with Mexico’s healthcare plans, you get what you pay for, so plenty of research is required.

It is very simple to book an appointment online and get in front of the doctor even without insurance.  Many expats choose to pay out of pocket for medical needs depending on what their needs are.  Even prescriptions you’ll find are extremely reasonable and accessible without a long wait.

In Conclusion

There are some areas of Mexico that are dangerous, however staying in the centralized areas is perfectly safe and offer a sense of freedom.

No city is perfect, but in my humble experience, Mexico City offers more than I ever imagined and my overall experience - actually my life gets better and better as time passes.
