The Rich Tapestry of Music in Mexico City

Series Pt 1:

Beyond the Brochures - Things That Amaze Me About Mexico City

Music in Mexico City

From the passionate strumming of mariachis to the energetic beats of rock and the soulful melodies of traditional folk music, Mexico City's rich culture is eloquently expressed through its music. Mexico City's music scene is a whole vibe. It is a diverse tapestry of traditional, contemporary, and international sounds.

Upon moving to this city, I expected to hear mostly traditional Mexican music, but I’ve been blown away at the variation of genres that I hear on a regular basis, which has been incredibly refreshing.  There’s a constant backdrop of music accompanied by laughter, conversation, and the clanking of glasses.

Most of all, Mexican youth love love reggaetón in English or Spanish.  There are many clubs in the Juarez neighborhood that I’ve strolled past with reggaetón blasting from its windows and reggaetón always that gets the crowd pumped. Club-goers will throw their heads back and scream the song from the top of their lungs, drink in hand.   I also sometimes witness young people jamming to popular U.S. songs that I’d never heard of, which I find hilarious.

One of my favorite genres has always been techno.  I’m no longer a spring chicken, but I will always vibe to techno until my legs fail me.  I was certain that I wouldn’t hear it much after moving here, but I actually have much more access than I did in the states.  In the U.S., the music appeals to a varied age group, but here it’s a very young scene.  I don’t care, I just close my eyes and get my techno therapy. Another of my favorites is afro pop, which I’m pleased to say is played often in its native African tongue, English and Spanish.

Music in Mexico City

The range of music genres is more varied here than anywhere else in the world (those are my words and I stand by them). Echoing through the streets of Mexico City, you can hear traditional Mexican music, urban Latin, Spanish rock, hip hop, indie, alternative, salsa, pop, Latino trap, Flamenco, cumbia, samba, African, jazz, blues, all types of International music and much more.  Each style captivates hearts and tells a story, reflecting the diverse cultural heritage of this vibrant metropolis and demonstrating the openness of the culture. As you wander through the city streets here, let the music guide you, immersing yourself in the symphony of sounds that makes this city a true musical haven.
