Beyond Books: La Biblioteca Publica in San Miguel de Allende

A Cultural Gem

Yes, La Biblioteca Publica or the Public Library of San Miguel de Allende is a local organization that lends books and periodicals.  It is that indeed.  But one cannot dismiss the fact that it is so much more. This library takes on the role of a community center that is wholly invested in its public’s well being, ensuring that citizens of all ages from small children through senior citizens have a destination that will always be intellectually stimulating. It does not receive government funding.  In fact, it is a non-profit organization that has structured its programs to facilitate abounding hours of culture and education for anyone who dares to partake.  For this reason, it is a worthy stop along your tour of San Miguel de Allende.

Along with its native language, the library accommodates English for its largest expat and tourist population. There is a Sala Español and a Sala Inglés (Spanish and English Reading Rooms) for patrons to engross themselves in their genre of choice.  Cross learning of the two languages is highly encouraged and facilitated through language exchanges and English classes.  The Infant and Youth Reading Room boasts approximately 4,500 books in both languages.

BOOKSTORE

Immediately upon entering the library, there is the bookstore with a vibrant mural in oranges, reds and blues that will distract you from its delightful offerings.  Gifts, soaps, trinkets, new and used books could go barely noticed thanks to artist David Leonardo and his team.  The spectacular scene is called Cultura Chichimeca and depicts the indigenous culture and warriors of the Chichimeca region in Mexico.

SALA QUETZAL

Sala Quetzal or Quetzal Room is a quaint theater space that showcases a second mural by David Leonardo and his team. Cultural Originarias depicts the 62 original indigenous cultures of Mexico complete with a map and labels.  While incredibly detailed and colorfully illustrated, this mural is a wonderful teaching tool. The Sala Quetzal and bookstore’s art scenes took two years total to complete.

The cafe has an intimate seating area or there is use of the outdoor courtyard situated in the center of the library with free wifi.

In a charming patio near the cafe is a yet another stunning mural, Stirling Dickinson, Escuela de Arte, Est. 2016 painted by art students.
