How to Trust Yourself: The Power of Intuition

Do you want to take that first solo trip, but can’t seem to get over the fear?  Would you love to move to a different city or country, but feel stuck?  Believe it or not strengthening your intuition could be the key to moving the gears forward and to take action. For instance, if you’d like to travel alone, but have a stifling fear of having a terrible trip or even worse, a fear of what could happen to you abroad, maybe the real fear is of your own decision-making. Intuition empowers you to trust yourself without fail.   This does not mean that you are infallible; quite the opposite.  You will trust that you make solid decisions with the help of your subconscious, your God or your spirit guides.  But for those decisions that you’ve made where maybe you missed the mark, you should trust that you are tuned in enough to gracefully pivot.

With the constant noise and external influences, it's easy to feel disconnected from our inner compass. However, deep within each of us lies a powerful tool that can guide us through life's twists and turns: our intuition. Often dismissed or overlooked, intuition is our innate ability to tap into our inner wisdom, providing guidance and insights that logic alone cannot offer. In times of uncertainty or difficult decisions, our intuition can be a guiding light. It can help us navigate relationships, career choices, and even personal growth. We will explore the power of intuition and discover ways to cultivate and trust this invaluable resource in any situation because embracing it allows us to make choices that lead to greater fulfillment, authenticity, and overall well-being.

Understanding Intuition

Intuition is not some mystical force reserved for a select few. It is a natural gift we all possess, waiting to be recognized and embraced. At its core, intuition is a combination of our past experiences, emotions, and subconscious processing and spiritual connection.  It allows us to make decisions and judgments beyond what our conscious mind can comprehend. By learning to tune in and listen, we can tap into this well of wisdom.

Cultivating Intuition

Cultivating our intuition requires creating space for reflection and self-awareness. Practices such as mindfulness, daily meditation, and journaling can help quiet the noise of everyday life and allow our intuition to flourish. Paying attention to our gut feelings, bodily sensations, and subtle cues from our environment can also sharpen our intuition over time. The keys are to Feel, Listen, Trust, Be and very importantly, Forgive.

FEEL

You can identify the presence of your intuition by simply being open to sensing it. Your intuition will make itself known through physical sensations like goosebumps, a shiver down your spine, a faster heartbeat, and quicker breaths. Sometimes, it may be more subtle and can only be described as a deep 'knowing'. You'll feel it when something is right - it will be clear, nourishing, and fulfilling. Similarly, you'll feel it when something is off like a clear voice that tells you “no” or maybe a subtle stomach ache coming on. Initially, trusting your intuition may be difficult if you're not used to it, but over time, you can gradually place your trust in it if that feels more comfortable. It will definitely be worth it.

LISTEN

You can’t hear your intuition if you’re not paying attention. Practice tuning in to it, paying attention to how it feels, and following its suggestions.  A great way to get started is to ask for clarity on a particular issue, and then trust and believe that you will receive a clear answer through synchronicity, your body signaling to you or receiving a concise sensation of knowing. Once you begin to listen and respect the whisper, the positive outcomes will be proof positive. Give it a shot and witness the results. Doing so will enhance creativity, confidence and happiness.

TRUST

The phrase ‘gut feeling’ holds great meaning. Studies show that our gut is a tangible representation of our emotions and intuition. Known as the 'second brain', it contains a complex network of neurons called the enteric nervous system (ENS). With around 100 million neurons, the ENS surpasses the spinal cord and peripheral nervous system. This is why we feel uneasy when confronted with challenging choices or when ‘something is just not right’.

Reflecting on past experiences where your intuition guided you successfully can also boost confidence in your inner voice. Remember, intuition is a muscle that strengthens with use.

BE

Using Meditation & Mindfulness

Meditation

Meditation involves directing your focus towards a single object, such as your breath, a mantra, or a sound. You are quieting your mind to allow your higher self, God or your intuition to communicate with you subtly.  I sometimes picture seeds being planted in my heart and mind.  Engaging in meditation can bring about a sense of tranquility, alleviate stress, and enhance your overall well-being. However, meditation also holds the potential to positively influence your intuition, which is the ability to perceive or understand things without conscious reasoning. Through regular meditation, you can heighten your awareness of your inner voice, emotions, and bodily signals. Additionally, you can rid your mind of distractions, prejudices, and judgments that may hinder your inner wisdom. Meditation enables you to access your subconscious mind, where your intuition resides, and tap into its wisdom and guidance.

If you need some bare bones guidance on just how to meditate, try a meditation program or coaching and gift yourself with techniques that will last a lifetime.

Mindfulness

Solitude has the power to silence the chaos of the world and enable you to tap into your inner voice. Mindfulness is the practice of focusing on the present moment. By directing your attention towards your current experience, mindfulness eliminates mental distractions and paves the way for a profound connection with your intuition.  The past is behind us and the future hasn’t yet arrived.  Savor the moment and focus on the present.

FORGIVE

You are an imperfect human and will not always make decisions that are in your best interest, even when making the best efforts to tune in.  Also, sometimes you could be led into situations where you need to learn lessons, whereas if you consciously had the choice, you would do something different.  Forgiving yourself when you feel you’ve made a wrong turn is an essential part of personal growth and self-compassion.  Reject the tendency to cultivate distrust in your own gut and instead reflect on the circumstances and learn from the experience. By acknowledging our mistakes or lack of knowledge of the greater plan, accepting them with kindness, and using them as stepping stones for future decision-making, we can cultivate resilience and continue to trust in our intuition with renewed confidence. While you are working on strengthening your intuition, you will also need to trust that you can get yourself out of any situation that an undesirable decision might cause.

A good example of this is that I recently moved.  I looked for a place that fit my budget while in the process of saving money as well as staying in my previous neighborhood.   I found a place and moved right in with a handshake and a smile.  Super easy.  Turns out, the owner of this particular apartment was a nightmare and didn’t want to take care of his responsibilities.   I will soon be moving again to an amazing apartment, newly renovated in a quiet area with great shopping nearby.  It’s an apartment that I feel that I deserve.  From this experience I learned so much that I couldn’t have otherwise.  The lessons are endless and I wouldn’t change a thing.  But if I’d originally known that the landlord would be a disaster, I would’ve chosen to go in a different direction. In hindsight, I’m thankful for the lesson.

CONCLUSION

Trusting ourselves allows us to align with our true desires, and make choices that lead to a more fulfilling and purposeful life. So, take a moment, close your eyes, and listen to its whispers. It might just be the key to unlocking your path to happiness and success.
