Experience the Quirky Charm of Cafebrería el Péndulo

A Cafe and Bookstore Like No Other

Books are my loyal companions.

They are my beloved friends and faithful confidants.

An incredible source of solace, strength, and inspiration, I relish their presence.

I find deep comfort in their pages and the words that fill them.

In their company, I am never alone.

When it comes to the perfect atmosphere for meeting friends or just soaking in the vibes, few things are more inviting than a combination of books and delicious food.  Cafebrería el Péndulo is a restaurant.  It is also a bookstore.  And yet, it is so much more than the sum of its parts.  It has somewhat outgrown its namesake.  The “cafe” of the cafebrería is now a full-blown restaurant with quite an extensive menu, chocked full of impressively delightful offerings.  El Péndulo is a stimulating gathering spot that serves breakfast, lunch, or dinner four of its locations even have a full bar area.

Cafebrería el Péndulo opened its first location in La Condesa, Mexico City in 1993.   It is now a cultural hub of the city boasting an impressive collection of records and books on subjects like poetry, biography, art, music, theatre, anthropology and more in both Spanish and English. There are now seven locations, all within Mexico City with the Polanco location recognized as one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world. Peruse the collections and you will surely find unexpected gems to feed your insatiable appetite of the written word, pun intended.  Its unique gift section tugs at your sleeve as you dare try to exit.  Board games, tarot cards, and traditional Mexican trinkets have all overpowered my will.

You’re invited to come in and get cozy among the books. The eclectic architectural design, open-air sections, and multiple seating styles will ensure that you stay for hours.  Grab a comfy couch to read alone, a coffee-bar table to catch up with a friend, or an outdoor table for a group of four.  The wooden floors and metal railings distinguish these bookstores from any other with a very clear objective of an elevated experience. Check the website for locations and hours and the calendar of events at pendulo.com for a multitude of cultural activities from book readings and literary courses to live music performances. Don’t miss this elevated book-dining experience when you visit Mexico City.
